Eden Prairie Parks and Recreation offers a variety of tennis programs for all ages and abilities.

Youth Tennis Programs for ages 4–14 and Teen/Adult Lessons are offered at outdoor City-owned tennis courts in the spring and summer. After-school lessons are offered in the fall. Drills and games are used in all classes to learn more about the strategy of the game. USTA-certified instructors demonstrate tennis etiquette and good sportsmanship. Students' skills are evaluated to determine their performance in lessons, skills to work on and which class to register for next session. Click on the ‘Register Online’ button to find programs.

What Should I Bring?

Remember to bring your water bottle, tennis shoes, sunscreen and tennis racket! Tennis balls are provided.

Kids — Need a Tennis Racket?
Junior tennis rackets can be purchased online for summer tennis lessons. Rackets must be ordered two weeks before the first lesson. Please provide the student’s height in inches. Look for more information when registering.

How to choose the correct tennis racket for my child?
If a child is 5 years old or younger and is 44 inches or shorter, a 19- or 21-inch racket is a good fit. If a child is age 6 to 8 and is 45-49 inches tall, select a 23-inch racket. For children age 8 to 10 with a height between 50 and 55 inches, a 25-inch racket is appropriate. A child can comfortably handle a 26-inch racket if he/she is older than 10 and taller than 55 inches. Click here for more information.

Weather Hotline
Call the weather hotline at 952-949-8449 for updated weather-related lesson cancellations. Fridays are used for make-up sessions.

LESSON OPTIONS

Munchkin for Ages 4–7
Munchkin is designed to introduce tennis to young children. Students work on hand-eye coordination while learning the fundamental strokes of tennis. Eden Prairie Tennis uses the USTA-approved 10 and Under format for Munchkin lessons, which is scaled down to be more appropriate for our younger and smaller players so they can see results, learn to rally and play faster. They use specialized equipment and smaller court dimensions.

Beginner for Ages 714
Beginner is for the student with little to no tennis experience. Basic techniques of the forehand and backhand strokes, serve and rules are covered. A quick-start format is utilized.

Intermediate/Advanced for Ages 9–14
Intermediate focuses on the basics at a higher level of play and on a larger court. Game strategy and scoring are also covered.

Adult Programs for Ages 16+
Both Beginner and Intermediate levels are offered. The Beginner class is for the player who has little or no tennis experience. In Intermediate, students learn the basics of forehand, backhand, serve, volley and begin match play. Students practice techniques of each stroke and concentrate on tennis strategy.

SUMMER LEAGUE

USTA Jr. Team Tennis for Ages 10–18
Team tennis is for players who are confident in their basic tennis skills and want to participate in a lot of match play throughout the summer. Singles, doubles and mixed doubles are played. There are both home and away matches as well as practices. Transportation to all practices and matches is provided by parent.

Fee includes USTA Jr. Membership, eligibility for all USTA tournaments, one-year subscription to Smash Magazine and certified coaches.

A two-day USTA Team Tennis Area Championship is organized to provide participants a safe and encouraging environment. Tournament location (Twin Cities area) and exact mid-July dates vary each year.
